Carrier Oils

Essential oils are concentrated therefore they are diluted before applying. Carrier oils (base oil) which are pure vegetable oils are used for diluting the essential oils and they carry them to the skin. Before use essential oils need to be mixed with a carrier oil. Essential oils do not go rancid. Carrier oils, however, can go rancid. Carrier oils that you purchase should be natural and unadulterated. Exceptions include buying carrier oils that have natural vitamin E added. Vitamin E acts as a natural preservative.

Always mix essential oils in glass, porcelain or aluminum bottles as the oil will react with plastic. Examples of carrier oils are sweet almond oil, apricot kernel oil and grape seed oil. Carrier oils can go rancid. Carrier oils are also available in forms in which vitamin E is added which acts as a natural preservative. Carrier oils play a far more significant role in aromatherapy than many people realise, and in comparison to the essential oils some people feel they are of little importance.

Carrier oils are always vegetable in origin. They should be natural, unprocessed oils which have not been treated with chemicals. Any vegetable oil can be used as a carrier but some are more suitable than others. For instance, virgin olive oil could be used but its smell would overpower your chosen essential oil and also it is quite expensive.
